Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas naturally released from rock, soil, and water. Radon Gas can enter homes and buildings through small cracks or openings in the basement floor/crawl space and build up in the home. Over time, breathing in radon gas can impact your health and cause lung cancer.
-21,000 people will succumb to a radon related death.
-Radon is the #1 environment cause of any cancer
-A Radon level of 4.0 pCi/L is equal to 200 chest x-rays or smoking 8
cigarettes per day.
-The EPA recommends taking action to mitigate radon gas at 4.0 pCi/L
-The WHO is more conservative and recommends mitigating at 2.7 pCi/L
-There is NO known safe level of radon gas.
-Testing for Radon is the first step of mitigation. Testing takes and average of four days and is inexpensive. See our Testing page for more information.
There are many areas throughout Idaho that have high levels of radon; about 2 out of 5 homes that have been tested in the state have levels above 4.0 pCi/L.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention strongly recommend that ALL homebuyers have an indoor radon test performed prior to purchase or taking occupancy, and recommend having the radon levels mitigated if elevated radon concentrations are found. Elevated radon concentrations can easily be reduced by a radon mitigator. All homes should be tested regardless of geographic location or foundation type. Radon, a Class-A human carcinogen is the leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers and the second leading cause overall.
